Moonfighter is a fun gravity-based shoot-em-up that challenges players to pilot their spacecraft around lunar terrains and blast aliens whilst collecting energy spheres to extend their mission time. Players can progress through thousands of Moonfighter levels, each one offering more challenging terrains and more enemy attacks.

Moonfighter offers three types of alien enemies: Turrets - static units placed at strategic points around the terrain; Spiderbots - walking units that climb the cavern walls and Saucerbots - anti-gravity platforms that can float around. Enemy attacks take the form of Guns - unguided laser bolts with unlimited range; Missiles - medium range guided torpedoes; and G-weapons - short range gravity distortion fields that either attract or repel your craft. As players fly around the alien terrains they will encounter narrow valleys, lunar peaks, and underground caverns many of which are protected by heavy-duty blast doors.

Blast alien enemies whilst avoiding their weapons

Microsoft appears to be looking for new ways to tie Windows Mobile phones and Zune media players together, although a Zune phone remains unlikely. Over the weekend, Microsoft developer “Mel” asked an open question on the Windows Mobile blog: “What are some ways the Zune player and a Windows Mobile device can work better together?” Since then, more than 50 commenters have suggested ways that Microsoft might converge the two devices. The most common idea is to essentially replace the Windows Media Player on Windows Mobile devices with Zune software. “I proposed that WMP should be fazed out in favor of a combined WMP/Zune player which will synch with both Windows Media AND Zune, instead of having to have two separate apps with two different libraries for each device,” wrote one commenter using the name Colin Walker.

Last week at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, Microsoft launched a new version of its Windows Live Mobile Developer Program, enabling developers to create mobile versions of Windows Live services designed for virtually any mobile phone, independent of its OS. According to Microsoft, updates include new Mobile Services Protocol features and a new SDK enabling development of mobile versions of Windows Live Hotmail, Windows Live Messenger and Windows Live Spaces applications. Debuted two years ago, the Windows Live Mobile Developer Program now boasts more than 70 independent software vendor partners creating apps for deployment across more than 800 Windows Live for Mobile-equipped handsets.

It may not be as intuitive or attractive as OS X on the iPhone, it may not be as new and zeitgeist as Android, but someone has still seen fit to laud Windows Mobile: version 6 of the mobile OS this week won the GSM Association’s 2008 award for “Best Mobile Enterprise Product or Service“.

“A leading platform for business owing to the ease of integration with Microsoft Exchange infrastructure. For the SMB market in particular, Windows Mobile 6 is an attractive proposition” GSM Association judge’s comments

A cynical man, woman or child might note that, since Microsoft Exchange is also made by, well, Microsoft, it would be both a surprise and non-inconsiderable oversight if WM6 was incompatible with it. In my experience, setting up a smartphone running WM6 to access an Exchange server is still frankly too complicated: why can’t the server give me a unique code that I plug into the handset, which promptly retrieves all the settings itself?

If I sound harsh, it’s only because I care (a bit); the iPhone’s ease of activation and setup has shown users just how straightforward a cellphone can be, and Windows Mobile needs to catch up if it wants to retain market share. It could also do with some plastic surgery: as the screenshots of version 6.1 show, Microsoft still haven’t quite got the hang of putting together a pretty mobile OS.

Congratulations Microsoft; now go and work harder!
